Maria Costa earned her B.A. in both Art History and Studio Art (painting) at the College of Charleston, Charleston, SC. She has worked as a portrait artist doing commissions which over time, developed her interest in psychology. Maria completed her M.A. in Counseling Psychology with an Emphasis in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, CA. She is in the process of completing her hours for licensure as a Marriage & Family Therapist. Since re-locating to Montana, Maria has started training in Emotionally Focused Therapy.
Whether working with couples or individuals, Maria has found that the EFT approach has a wonderful way of making sense of complex emotional experience. One of the things that worries people about therapy is that it will be focused only on the past at the expense of the present. The present is where life is happening, so why dwell on the past? This is a very good point, since the present is what we can do something about. To couples and individual clients: Together we can gently mine the past and how it influences the present; our goal: to make a difference in the present.
In her free time, Maria adores animals: horses, cats, cottontail rabbits, and her box turtle. She has become very interested in Northern Italian cooking to honor her Italian heritage. Her painting continues with skyscapes of light and atmosphere. She likes to look out her window and not always see a blue sky.
